Technology for all the right reasons
Matthias Laschke spricht auf dem FutureDay 2016 über unsere Pleasurable Troublemaker. Der FutureDay wird vom Zukunftsinstitut ausgerichtet und ist ein Kongress, der sich seit 2000 mit bevorstehenden kulturellen, technologischen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen beschäftigt. Im Rahmen des Kongresses werden auch eine Auswahl von Troublemakern ausgestellt. Wir freuen uns auf den FutureDay.
Der Technik-Salon an der Leibniz Universität Hannover ist ein Kulturpodium für Technik, das sich den Querbezügen zwischen Technik, Kultur und Gesellschaft verschrieben hat und Technik nicht als reines Ingenieurfach auffasst. Dabei geht es um eine Verantwortung von Ingenieuren und Gestaltern gegenüber der Gesellschaft, als Sorge für das Gemeinwesen und das Wohlergehen künftiger Generationen.
Matthias Laschke und ich sind im Zuge unserer gemeinsamen Forschung zu den Pleasurable Troublemakern vom Technik-Salon eingeladen worden und können uns einen ganzen Abend dieser Thematik zusammen mit einem Publikum widmen.

There is increasing interest in the potential use of interactive technologies as a means to motivate attitudinal and behavioral change. At the heart of this function is the provision of feedback, such as steps taken, kilowatt-hours used, or liters of water consumed. Often, however, this feedback involves a mere visualization—an appeal aimed at turning meaning into action. The present paper suggests an alternative approach: feedback designed to create situated friction, which then inspires reflection and meaning-making. Such frictional feedback attempts to disrupt routines and to imply alternative courses of action. At the same time, it should be experienced as acceptable and meaningful. The present case explores the experience of frictional feedback through the Never Hungry Caterpillar, a device designed to avoid the energy wastage caused by keeping electronic equipment in standby mode.
