Ich freue mich auf die Marktforscher

RTEmagicC_BVM-Kongress-2013_Hauptprogramm_fin_Titelseite.jpg

maneCANpiss | by Daniel Töös

mcp_Studio_02

Healthy and blooming plants are beautiful to look at. However, in order to keep these living friends alive, it is necessary to take care of them. Although it is said that talking to them is beneficial, watering the plants from time to time should be a good starting point.

The watering can maneCANpiss is about watering plants frequently. Like any other watering can, maneCANpiss is filled with water from the top and watering the flowers is done by a nozzle-spout. However, if maneCANpiss is filled with water, it starts to continuously lower its nozzle-spout until the water spills – at worst on important things lying at the window sill. The longer you forget to water your flowers, the more water will spill. However, to avoid spilling water you can do two things. The former is to lift up the nozzle-spout – safe with the knowledge that you cheated yourself – the latter is to water your flowers.

Design Theater in Hex Hex

What I like the most when giving a talk is questions and answers – I need at least the faint notion of a dialogue. In Lund, HEX HEX, I got more … I … got … a … LAB! So I asked the students to design an experience around the notion of a “little secret”, mediate it through an object, and present it as a roleplay.

Here are two examples

The belieber

Honey, I’m in the park reading a book right now!

A nice crowd …

… and embarrassing scenes in the pub afterwards (Jessica, how can we ever be taken serious again???).

Thanks for the good times.

Jessica Enevold invited me to  give a talk in the context of HEX DIGITAL CULTURES LECTURES AND LAB.

Experience before Things @ alt.chi 13

It’s trailertime again!

While things (i.e., technologies) play a crucial role in creating and shaping meaningful, positive experiences, their true value lies only in the resulting experiences. It is about what we can do and experience with a thing, about the stories unfolding through using a technology, not about its styling, material, or impressive list of features. This paper explores the notion of “experiences” further: from the link between experiences, well-being, and people’s developing post-materialistic stance to the challenges of the experience market and the experience-driven design of technology.

All You Need is Love

Hassenzahl, M., Heidecker, S., Eckoldt, K., Diefenbach, S., & Hillmann, U. (2012). All You Need is Love: Current Strategies of Mediating Intimate Relationships through Technology. ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction (TOCHI), 19(4), 30. doi:10.1145/2395131.2395137

A wealth of evidence suggests that love, closeness, and intimacy—in short relatedness—are important for people’s psychological well-being. Nowadays, however, couples are often forced to live apart. Accordingly, there has been a growing and flourishing interest in designing technologies that mediate (and create) a feeling of relatedness when being separated, beyond the explicit verbal communication and simple emoticons available technologies offer. This article provides a review of 143 published artifacts (i.e., design concepts, technologies). Based on this, we present six strategies used by designers/researchers to create a relatedness experience: Awareness, expressivity, physicalness, gift giving, joint action, and memories. We understand those strategies as starting points for the experience-oriented design of technology.
